Still hot hot weather!

August 2nd, 2011

Hello Everyone,

Us Canadians love our summers, our heat and our exercise.  I am still going to comment on the weather because we are still in a very hot summer season.  There are a lot of reasons to exercise and many not too.

Not exercising as much as your normally do for a few weeks will not seriously harm you or your dog, or horse!  While on my barn calls, I recently learned of a rider who took extreme care in hydrating their horse and exercised in small amounts, however, she forgot about herself.  She became dehydrated and fell off her horse!  You can become dehydrated and dizzy in these extreme weather conditions.  It can creep up on you quickly and disaster can happen, especially if you are 6 feet off the ground on your horse!

There are many dangers to becoming heat exhausted, too many to go into here.  However, I can not stress enough the hydration, mineral consumption, hats cover ups, sunscreen and exercise in the coolest part of the day…and that is just for you.  Similar for your dog or horse…without the hats!

Reduce your time in the heat (avoid leaving pets in cars), increase your water for all and enjoy.

Thanks to a recent comment, definitely becareful of hot sidewalks and pavement that can burn your dogs paws!  Thanks for sharing information that can help keep our pets healthy.

Take care to enjoy the short summer season.  Stay healthy and strong.

Hot hot weather

July 20th, 2011

Hello Everyone,

I have been enjoying the hot weather. Drinking a lot of water, taking minerals and trying not to do too much cardio type exercising outside.

I have been concerned about pets in cars. Now is the time to think twice about taking your dog with you on your errands around town. Don’t leave them in the car for even five minutes. Remember how hot a car is when you first get and and you immediately either wind down the windows or blast the air conditioning as high as it can go!! Your pet can’t do that so don’t leave them in the car for any length of time.

Make sure you take a lot of water with you on walks or exercising in parks. Try and reduce your walk times in half during the extreme weather. They too get over heated and tired achy muscles.
Try and walk in early morning or later evening to avoid the hottest time of the day.

You want to enjoy your dog but try and do it safely for yourself and them.

Be smart, take a step back and think about it.

Have a great day.

Spring means layers.

April 20th, 2011

Hello Everyone,

As I was out for my first bike ride, I was so enthusiastic to be out on my bike I forgot one fundamental rule – layer, layer, layer.  To my horror, 5 minutes out on the road I realized that even though I was warming up the wind was whipping through me.  I had to head back to put another layer on both the bottom and top!

We all are desperate for the spring, well atleast I am.  I am looking forward to all the outdoor spring and summer activities.  To enjoy them more and to prevent injuries don’t forget to LAYER UP.  You can always take a layer off or unzip a jacket.

Enjoy the new spring and prepare properly so you don’t injury your muscles and joints.

Have a great day.

a new year

January 14th, 2011

Hello Everyone,

I always find the start of a new year makes me think of how I can improve for the future. I am sure a lot of us don’t like change, but ‘if you change nothing, then nothing changes’.

I use this new year to focus on an internal balance. Three things will balance us; mind, body, spirit. Usually when I am stressed I am not paying attention to one of these and I feel it.

Change can be hard for some people.   At first this can be challenging but over time it will become a habit and you will do it automatically.

Take care of yourself.

Getting educated

December 4th, 2010

I have a flaw.  I love learning.  If I don’t know something I read, ask questions, learn about the topic.  Because if you don’t learn you get left behind in the world.

Because of my love of learning, I offer educational talks/seminars to clubs, offices, equine establishments, dog groups etc.  I am doing one today at the Rescue Greyhound club.  I am so happy that they are interested on learning what is available to help their dogs.

If you are interested in having me out, please call my office or e-mail me to see what I can do to help.  Have a great day.

Remembering

November 11th, 2010

Hello,

I like to remember many special people and pets on this day.  We all have very busy lives but I take time to remember why we live here and what makes our lives special.

We can not have a future unless we know where we have come from as a nation.  We are caring people and I take time to honour those I know and those I don’t know who sacraficed to make our lives better.  There are many people who served in the past and currently.  I honour these people as well as I honour the dogs and horses that serve to keep us safe.

Let’s not forget.
